Major or Minor Refits of Vessels for Commercial Use

We recently found out this magnificent classic 57 feet Laurent Giles sailing yacht is (really) for sale.  Surely, this is not a vessel for a first time sailor but it isn’t something that is going to ever look like another GRP white boat in the bay.

This is considered to be a UK vessel of national importance.

With its own Wikipedia page, ‘Sails of Dawn’ ocean racing yachts is, and I quote:

an ocean racing yacht and cruising yacht, one of the last boats John Laurent Giles saw launched before his death in 1969 It was built to Lloyds 100A1 certification, while being also under Royal Ocean Racing Club certification and also to Lloyds 100A1 for the owner DD Morell of Mitchell Construction.

Only three yards in Britain submitted tenders for the build, others stating the quality unattainable in the time-frame , and so it was down to two yards, McGruer of Clynder and Robertsons yard. McGruers were chosen for the price of 48,000* British pounds plus 8% design fees to Laurent Giles.”

*in 2018 the equivalent of £48000 would be £743,140.11

The Vessel is also featured by Yachting Monthly magazine 1971 Feburary issue.

It is currently located in Malta on land and works are still carried on. The current owner, a former P&O master mariner, is simply looking forward to recover some of the money spent, thus, is accepting offers in the region of £100k.

It is not uncommon that these beautiful vessels get acquired a bit on a whim due to their beauty and charm and without an accurate plan and budget for what it takes to bring them back to their splendour and seaworthiness. Oftentimes it take too much time for owners that are not in their 30s anymore or more money and energy than well-meaning hopeful buyers  can afford, that is why it is key to have a team like ours to support the acquisition and sail through what in this case would be the last leg of refitting.

If you would like our team to help you acquire and finish this vessel providing a detailed-budget and refitting plan to finish the works to your specification and launch the vessel please get in touch.

Recently we received a phone call that was pleasantly surprising. The Morgan Yacht 70 feet that was almost ready to be launched a few years ago  (and never was) had been brought out of a messy situation involving the bankruptcy of Aicon Yachts and liquidation of its asset.

The Morgan Yacht 70 was originally designed after the smaller sister the Morgan Yacht 130ft initially sold to Ferrari CEO, Cordero di Montezemolo.

A shipyard owner that we trust had been involved in moving the vessel on land and is involved in ‘refreshing’ it as the vessel was covered in the shipyard for quite a few years during the legal issues of Aicon Yacht that had acquired the brand in most recent years.

The vessel represents maybe the last opportunity to acquire a new (under full warranty) Morgan Yacht 70 at a very competitive price in the region of euros 1.1m with 0 hours on the engines and full warranty on all its

Note: The image below refers to another unit (sister ship) of Morgan 70.

Morgan Yacht 70components.

This vessel was proposed well over Euros 1.7m-2.1m (depending on the customization required) in the past. In other words, this is a unique off-market opportunity to acquire a vessel that will surely become a collector’s item.

The Vessel is offered now at a firm price of €1.1M

It’s 2017 and the world wide web has evolved quite a bit but eBay has been around for over 30 years and it became famous precisely for auctions. Auctions are particularly suitable for boats because unlike cars boats are much harder to price and at times there is a significant difference between a boat theoretical value and the price that a cash-strained owner is ready to accept to part with his/her boat and get rid of the costs that come with owning a vessel.

I know a lot of yachting industry professionals will raise more than a few eyebrows for what we are about to write but here it is:

How to find very good deals for small and medium size boats on eBay and what should you look out for.

First and foremost decide what your actual goal is. If you are not a professional and you think you can buy low and sell high, please make sure you have experience in budgeting and refitting boats because, rest assured, even the most seasoned professionals (and I am not going to mention any major shipyard here to avoid a lawsuit) happens to go wildly out of budget during a new built or a major refit. If you are planning to buy a vessel that you can charter, we have available a Yacht Charter Business plan template you can download

Mostly you will be able to find day cruisers, cuddy cabin cruisers, sky boats and walk around boats, sports fishing boats a few RIBs and quite a few sailboats too.

On Ebay uk you will actually find very interesting boats if you are into classic lines and wooden sailboats with the occasional pearl such as this Sparkman and Stephens we just noticed

Sparkman & Stephens for sale

In our little guide on how to find a good deal for a boat on Ebay, we would like to help if letting you know what to look at so here is a list of things you want to consider:

Before we get into to technical stuff, think about the location:

The Location

It’s a very important element because it can determine both your travel cost and time it will take to actually go and see the boat but also it can have a major impact on the cost of mooring in the water before you can actually sail the boat to your chosen home port. Furthermore, if you need to do some work before the vessel is seaworthy the current location of the vessel could have a major impact on those costs. Parts for the engine or rigging might be coming from far away and add quite a bit to your budget, as well as you might not have good enough facilities to carry out some specific works to your desired standard of quality or safety.  Budget very carefully if you are purchasing a vessel that can’t really be put on a trailer because moving a yacht on land can be a major expense and might end up costing more than the boat itself.

The Design and the Designer Name

If you are buying very cheap you might not be able to be to fuzzy about it, however if you are buying a Sparkman & Stephens for example you can rest assured the vessel will retain a certain value among those who appreciate classic yachts or you might even get lucky and find some VIP owners in the history of the boat which might influence the buyer’s decision later on, whenever you’ll decide to sell the vessel.

The Model and the Shipyard

If you are buying a vessel from a very well known shipyard and a very common model you might be able to find forums or small group of owners that might point you in the right direction on common faults or problems that particular model has or that other owners of similar units have experienced, a bit like classic cars. The shipyard instead might have a reputation for solid boats that are good for sailing around the world – some examples; Hallberg-Rassy or Oyster.

The Construction Material/s

Some construction materials we would just simply reccomend  to stay away from, for instance, Ferro-Cement. I am not going to bore you and explain why in this article. Some mixed constructions are tricky for example steel and aluminium are particularly complicated to join when welding so we would recommend you do your research in terms of what shipyard did it and how those stress points (joints) have put up with time and physical stress.  Let’s also bust a bit of a myth, fiberglass is a safer purchase then wood – we respectfully disagree with those who believe so. Wood is much easier to inspect without the help of a professional surveyor whereas a fibreglass hull with minor signs or initial osmosis can be much harder to detect than a rotten spot of wood. Also, if you plan to go sailing to the west coast of Africa it’s much more likely to find somebody who can repair wood and the supply of such material rather than fibreglass in general.  Carbon and Kevlar are very expensive and tricky to repair  but if you are looking at those you probably already know this. Steel is a great material but it can be subject to a lot more corrosion than you would expect in certain climates, so it’s often a good idea to call in a professional to measure the thickness in several spots of the vessel.  With aluminium you have similar issues as with steel however alluminium requires professionals that are generally harder to find to be fixed properly if need be. One trick is to consider that if you are looking at a fibreglass hull built in 1970 back in those years builders were just starting with fibreglass so your hull could be much more robust than you may think of course this ‘advantage’ would come with a bit more weight so you might need a little more HP on the engine to make up for it, compared to a modern vessel in the same size range and ‘style’.

Currently under construction and for sale is the Alurib tender.

This is a very peculiar vessel that can be used like a normal leisure RIB or for more heavy duty uses at diving schools, marine research expeditions, and military applications.

One of the main advantages of a non-inflatable tube is that it provides a large and well distributed storage area.

In our case we are studying a foldable wings system to turn this vessel into a small-size hydrofoil that can serve both the leisure market and the workboat market.

The price range of the vessel depending on the installed power will vary from 150k-250k euros.

Thanks to the Americas Cup and the associated media exposure, it seems that ,at last, the world of leisure boats and yachting is ready to start considering hydrofoil technology as a viable technology. We could not be happier as the Rodriquez family pioneered hydrofoils more than 65 years ago (see History). Indeed, in 1951 when Carlo Rodriquez was building the first commercial hydrofoil for passenger transportation purposes no marine transportation company was farsighted enough to see the future which was being written. Carlo, had to start his own high speed transportation company(SNAV) to prove to his shipyard’s prospective clients that hydrofoils were not a dream but a solid reality. The company was SNAV (Società Navigazione Alta Velocità) and it was effectively raising the bar by an average 20-25 knots in every-day marine passenger transportation.

The model was the Pt20 which was travelling at with 70 passengers at 30 knots cruise speed powered by one 1350hp engine built on specs by Mercedes marine (now MTU).

Only in the 70s a yacht version of the Pt20 built by Rodriquez was used by the James Bond’s movie Thunderball (See footage below)

Many years later the now super famous company Hobie Cat headed by Greg Ketterman  applied hydrofoil technology to build the world’s fastest production sailboat, namely the Trifoiler. Then noticed that the market wasn’t yet ready to enjoy this speeds as hydrofoils were yet not considered safe enough.

In 2013-2015 it seems that the time is finally right for the boaters to start foiling and quite a few shipyards are moving the first steps around this technology. One example in the sailing world is Gun Boats (https://www.gunboat.com) with their

G4 foiled catamaran.Sailing hydrofoil Gunboat g4

We are not sure that catamaran are the safest route to take when hydrofoil technology is applied for the general public outside of the insanity of the race boats of the Americas cup, however, it’s certainly through experimenting that innovative solutions and control systems will be developed and implemented in the leisure boat industry.

Hydrofoil technology is essentially aimed at maximising the efficiency and lowering consumption and we did not have to wait to long to see the first few examples of electric hydrofoils for private use such as the Quadrofoil. (image below)

Quadrofoil- electric hydrofoil

In mid-sized power catamaran there are mild applications of foil technology (Foil assisted boats) like the on of South Africa based company  Hysucraft (www.hysucraft.com).

Even in the world of board sports the trend seem to have exploded with foiled kite surf, windsurfs, regular surf board.

In 2015, we actually stumbled upon an event dedicated to hydrofoil technology called the Foiling Week (www.foilingweek.com) and we plan on getting more information on the topic and keep you up to date.

The trend on hydrofoil technology is doubtlessly here and most probably it’s here to stay and will be be significantly boosted by the media exposure of the Americas Cup.

At Rodriquez Consulting we hope that this trend will not be taken lightly from a technical point of view. It would be best to avoid the ‘Just add foils’ type of attitude of shipyards venturing in this technology. After all when the Rodriquez shipyards started building hydrofoils those were operated and maintained by professionals and the R&D behind each project was significant. A professional, serious approach to hydrofoil technology guaranteed many decades of safe operations (some of the earliest hydrofoils are still moving passengers around the world).

The hydrofoil technology implemented on pleasure boats requires an even more thoughtful technical process to avoid vessels that are not technically sound to go out on the market to non-experienced pleasure boaters.

In the world of the sharing economy some companies have come out trying to shake up the yachting industry but in our view all of them have not really cracked the fundamentals that would really enable them to do so.

A lot of the companies we have seen that position themselves towards the Airbnb of boating have done a very good job in listing boats and trying to simplify the booking process for renting a boat. One of the few issues we have seen is that very few of them have truly understood that boating is not the process of renting an asset but rather that of delivering an experience.

In the the difference between renting out assets (boats/yachts) and delivering and experience lays the recent success of companies like The Yacht Week which in truth haven’t revolutionised the market but have identified a target and have made a great job at delivering to a specific 20-somthing target market that essentially requires a alcohol-loaded boating experience.

UPyacht has caught our attention because of its unique membership model which isn’t a share of ownership on a specific boat which would inevitably come with liability and maintenance costs, but simply credit to enjoy boating experiences or boat-time to do whatever one decides to do. Membership makes very much sense in this business because, let’s face it, going on a yacht by yourself isn’t much fun unless you are solo-sailor doing The Race. So here they come with a fresh new concept and from what we have seen a solid set-up.

We have looked into their founding membership offer (agreement and T&C) which seems to be a limited offer that does make a lot of sense to us: In brief a one-time fee of £15000 gives you access to £5000 per year for 3 years worth of yachting with vessels ranging from 30 to 75feet (9-21 meters), their charter rate are published and this level of membership gives you 20% off of their listed price (including the high season) giving customers the possibility to choose their itinerary, share it with other members and friends. All their Yacht are skippered and experiences are from what we see orientated to a wide variety of customers, ultimately it makes sense for a family or even a company to purchase this kind of memberships where the credit can be used for a family holidays on a sailing catamaran or a wakeboarding weekend for the youngsters.

All of those who work in the industry of luxury yachts are familiar with the big international boat shows such as Monaco Yacht Show the one in Cannes, Ft Lauderdale, Miami, Dubai and Genova.  However, thanks to hydrofoil technology getting more popular in the recreational boating industry, we recently stumbled upon a new breed of boat show. It’s a mix between a commercial boat show, a technical conference and a sailing sport event and it’s called The Foiling Week  where hydrofoils are for trial.

It’s only at its second edition (Starting on July 1st on Lake Garda) but we are pretty confident that it will grow and take place in many other places around the world. Did you say UAE?

With the push of the Americas Cup featuring a significant deployment of hydrofoil technology by its shameless contenders we believe The Foiling Week is the boat show format to make boat shows really interesting and exciting again.

Have a look at this video of the first edition:

If you are marina manager you might want to consider to host a Foiling Week.
